Serious Fun for the Happy Campers: A Glimpse Into the Class of 2017’s Double H Ranch Experience
The senior class recently traveled to Lake Luzerne, NY to volunteer at The Double H Ranch. Double H is a branch of the Serious Fun Network and is dedicated to creating lasting memories for children with life threatening illnesses, ages 6-16. Among many seasonal opportunities offered by Double H throughout the year, the summer camp at Double H Ranch includes seven sessions of one week long residential summer camp. Seniors were assigned a session to attend, and stayed at the camp for six nights and seven days.
The camper population encompasses children with illnesses such as Sickle Cell Anemia, Cancer, HIV, Muscular Dystrophy, and many more. Due to their conditions, the children are not able to attend other camps, but are given an opportunity to attend Double H thanks to the camp’s highly trained medical staff. It is a time in the children’s summer to forget about any stressful situations they have had to conquer so early in their lives, as well as a time to make new friends and wonderful summer memories. The children get to experience activities such as horseback riding, fishing, boating, archery, arts and crafts, and even a trip to the local amusement park. No matter their illness or disability, Double H finds a way to make sure every child receives the same incredible experience during their camp stay.
As volunteers, the seniors were able to both contribute to the experience of the campers and learn about their illnesses on a first hand basis. Look out for our future article on how the week at Double H impacted our senior students!
